Restrictions On Live Music In Pubs
EDM number 712 in 1991-92, proposed by Tom Pendry on 19/02/1992.
That this House calls on the Government to introduce legislation aimed at eliminating the completely outdated restrictions which allow only two live musicians to perform on licensed premises unless the proprietor obtains first an expensive entertainments licence; recognises that modern technology enables almost exactly the same sound levels to be produced whether by live musician or record, tape, compact disc or other electronic means; further believes that the people of Britain who get so much enjoyment from pubs and other licensed premises should not have their choice of listening to reasonably sized live music groups limited by the imposition of an entertainments licence yet which does not apply to music produced by the recording companies nor for darts, pool matches, quizzes, strip shows and many other entertainments; notes that the lifting of restrictions on live musicians would create jobs and reduce unemployment; and believes that live and recorded music should be treated the same and the two musicians rule should be scrapped.
