Compensation For British Nuclear Test Veterans (No. 5)
EDM number 688 in 1991-92, proposed by Nigel Griffiths on 17/02/1992.
That this House welcomes the long-awaited announcement that compensation is to be paid to people who have been diagnosed as HIV-positive due to blood transfusions; believes that this principle of paying compensation to innocent victims should be extended to all British ex-service personnel who have contracted illnesses associated with exposure to radiation during nuclear test programmes and the resultant clean-up operations; believes that compensation is also due to the widows and families of the veterans who have already died as a result of such illnesses, and to the children of nuclear test veterans who suffer, or have suffered, from genetically-transmitted diseases and deformities; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to award just and adequate compensation to such groups immediately.
