Economic Situation In The North West
EDM number 673 in 1991-92, proposed by Audrey Wise on 13/02/1992.
That this House notes that when the honourable Member for Fylde referred on radio to redundant skilled workers at BAe as being 'liberated' he also suggested that they might be absorbed by small businesses; further notes that this shows little knowledge of the economic situation in the North West where, for example, Trade Indemnity, an independent credit insurance group estimates that business failure rose by 50 per cent. between the third quarter 1990 and the third quarter 1991, and Dun and Bradstreet, a business information company, calculated that there were 2892 business failures during the first nine months of 1991, an increase of 56.7 per cent. on the same period in 1990; and also wonders how many of the small businesses which are left could supply work suitable for skilled aerospace technicians.
