Military Use Of Harwell
EDM number 624 in 1991-92, proposed by Harry Cohen on 05/02/1992.
That this House notes the exchange in the Official Report, column 124, 4th February, between the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence Procurement and the honourable Member for Bolsover about Harwell, in which the Minister confirmed that military nuclear defence work is carried out there; notes that Harwell is supposed to be a purely civil nuclear facility; considers that the Government's blurring of the clear distinction between civil and military use is immediately serious as it sets an appalling example to other countries and makes effective inspection and verification far more difficult; considers that the criticism of developing nations, for adding military use to what they claim is their civil facilities, is dramatically weakened by the Ministry of Defence's policy in this respect; and demands an immediate government assurance that Harwell will be returned to purely civil use.'.
