Cold Weather Payments

EDM number 605 in 1991-92, proposed by Max Madden on 03/02/1992.

That this House expresses dismay at the sense of anger and grievance caused to pensioners in Bradford and elsewhere over the Government's arbitrary system for issuing cold weather payments; believes it is unfair that some pensioners, living in the same locality, should be denied payments when other pensioners are paid ú6; and urges that the basic retirement pension be increased in line with Labour Party policy, that pensioners dependent on the basic pension should have enough income so that they are not forced to choose between eating and heating, and that immediate arrangements are made to pay all eligible pensioners and other eligible people cold weather payments over this winter and the arrears they are owed.
