Report Of The Coalfield Communities Campaign
EDM number 591 in 1991-92, proposed by Harry Barnes on 30/01/1992.
That this House welcomes the recent report, The case against Gas-why Gas is wrong fuel for Britain's power stations, published by the Coalfield Communities Campaign; agrees that the electricity generators' 'dash for gas' for electricity generation would result in the premature exhaustion of the United Kingdom's North Sea gas reserves, inevitably leading to higher gas prices; believes that the further contraction of the United Kingdom coal industry arising from the use of gas in power stations would result in the sterilisation of millions of tonnes of workable coal reserves; and further believes that this short-sighted policy is neither in the interest of the consumer nor an appropriate use of scarce and valuable energy resources.
