Suspension Of Commons Television Until After The General Election
EDM number 577 in 1991-92, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 29/01/1992.
That this House notes that the forthcoming General Election will be the first one held with television cameras a permanent feature in the House of Commons Chamber during the period preceding such an election; believes that this has already dramatically and adversely affected the work of the House, has reduced debate into a sound-bite cliche contest, and triviliazed serious issues; asserts that on present performance the use of television coverage from the House will distort the balance which broadcasters are duty bound to maintain during an election campaign; and calls for the televising of the House of Commons to be suspended from now until after the General Election.
