Privatisation
EDM number 54 in 1991-92, proposed by Giles Shaw on 31/10/1991.
That this House records the success of Her Majesty's Government's privatisation programme, which has returned 46 state owned industries to private ownership, led to at least 11 million British shareholders, including many trade unionists, being given access to outside capital, and restored profitability while improving regulation and service to customers; notes with concern Labour's continuing determination to take back these industries into the public sector or otherwise interfere with them; notes also that Labour candidates in two of the three current by-elections have cast their own vote for privatisation against their party line by applying for shares; and calls on Her Majesty's Opposition to recognise the continuing success of privatisation as comprehensively as their own candidates have already done.
This motion has been signed by a total of 51 MPs.
