Gec Switchgear, Higher Openshaw, Manchester
EDM number 518 in 1991-92, proposed by Robert Litherland on 21/01/1992.
That this House deplores the intransigence of the management of GEC Switchgear, Higher Openshaw, Manchester, in its deliberations with representatives of the workforce and its insistence on the compulsory redundancies of 142 workers, when an interim result announcement shows profits of ú346 million and an order book currently standing at ú10.8 billion, looks forward to achieving long-term growth and boasts increased expenditure on research and development; realises that obviously these statistics are meaningless to the sacked workers at the Openshaw factory who are regarded by the management as surplus to requirements; regrets that the workers will themselves become mere statistics on the ever-increasing scrap heap of the unemployed; and calls on the Chairman and top management to intervene to save the jobs and future of this company.
