Hms Polar Circle
EDM number 509 in 1991-92, proposed by Michael Shersby on 20/01/1992.
That this House congratulates Her Majesty's Government on its foresight in chartering the new red ship HMS 'Polar Circle' for deployment in the South Atlantic; wishes Captain Turner and his crew every success in their hydrographic survey work around the Antarctic Peninsula; believes that the ship will also play a valuable role in the projection of British sovereignty in representing the country's national interests and in supporting national operations in the area; and considers that the vessel should be purchased at the unrepeatable price of ú25 million, thus ensuring the long-term presence of the Royal Navy in the seas around the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and the British Antarctic Territory for the foreseeable future.
