J.sainsbury Plc And Sunday Employment
EDM number 495 in 1991-92, proposed by Ray Powell on 16/01/1992.
That this House is appalled at the news that J. Sainsbury plc, like Woolworth's, not content with flagrant law-breaking, are now planning to make Sunday work compulsory and to pay less than premium remuneration to the staff involved; condemns this action unreservedly as an attack on the families and living standards of the staff and upon their rights to freedom from work on this special day of the week; notes that there are no effective legal safeguards for staff in this situation of unacceptable pressure being brought to bear on them; further notes that J. Sainsbury plc is, like the Kingfisher/Woolworth Group, a leading member of the Shopping Hours Reform Council and donor to Conservative Party funds; and calls upon the Government, yet again, to enforce the law and to support reform which will effectively safeguard the families and interests of all staff, namely the REST Proposals.
