Sufferers From Arachnoiditis
EDM number 476 in 1991-92, proposed by Gerry Steinberg on 14/01/1992.
That this House notes with deep concern the plight of sufferers of arachnoiditis, a relatively unknown yet devastating condition, which inflames and scars the arachnoid lining of the spinal chord, causing chronic pain; notes that as of yet there is no known cure and sufferers have been condemned in most cases to a life of agony; further notes that most cases have been induced by the Glaxo product 'Myodil', used in spinal investigations (Myleographs); and calls upon the Government to withdraw Glaxo's licence to produce Myodil, prohibit myleograph treatment, including the use of water-based dyes, ensure that all doctors recognise the progressive disabling nature of arachnoiditis, to enable victims to receive benefits such as mobility allowance, attendance allowance and prescription charge exemption and compensate sufferers, rather than them having to go through the ordeal of litigation.
