Independence Vote In The Ukraine

EDM number 466 in 1991-92, proposed by David Alton on 13/01/1992.

That this House notes the overwhelming vote for independence by the people of the Ukraine during last month's referendum; warmly congratulates Mr Kravchuk on his election as President; further notes the reaffirmation of the declaration of independence by the Ukrainian parliament which followed the referendum result; believes that the overwhelming will of the Ukranian people must be recognised by Western European peoples supporting full independence for the Ukraine within present borders; further believes that links both formal and informal should be established between the parliaments of the United Kingdom and the Ukraine; congratulates the Government on its recognition of the Ukraine as an independent entity; and very much looks forward to the day when official links can be made between the Ukraine and the EC.
