Sunday Trading - Post Christmas 1991

EDM number 441 in 1991-92, proposed by Alun Michael on 18/12/1991.

That this House condemns the decision by Tesco, Asda, Gateway and Safeway to continue their flagrant and arrogant campaign of law-breaking after Christmas; notes that the latter companies are all leading members of the well-funded Shopping Hours Reform Council which itself has close links with Government ministers and the Conservative Party; and calls upon the Government totally to dissociate itself from the actions of Tesco, Asda, Safety, Gateway and the Shopping Hours Reform Council, to take active steps to enable the law of the land to be enforced, and to reform the Shops Act 1950 in a way which fairly balances the various interests and freedoms involved and restores a level commercial playing field for those who respect the law rather than providing a commercial advantage to those who break the law.
