Mental Health Act Commission And Hackney Hospital

That this House notes that in its biennial report the Mental Health Act Commission has severely criticised the Secretary of State for Health over the provision of psychiatric services of Hackney Hospital in conditions that are a disgrace to a civilised society; notes that the Commission believes that the present suggestion of reproviding mental health services up to a maximum of ú10 million by superimposing them on existing sites at the Homerton and St. Bartholomew's is a short-term measure; welcomes the concern expressed by the Commission that capital funding is so dependent upon the vagaries of land values; and further welcomes the fact that the Commission draws the attention of Parliament to the need for capital funding of ú60 million to complete phase two of the Homerton Hospital to provide adequate facilities for the high numbers of patients being detained under the Mental Health Act.
