Shopping Hours Reform Council And Illegal Sunday Trading
EDM number 413 in 1991-92, proposed by David Alton on 17/12/1991.
That this House notes with concern that those retail companies leading a pre-Christmas campaign of deliberate law-breaking on Sundays are all fully paid-up members of the Shopping Hours Reform Council, a body whose Director, Mr Roger Boaden, is a former senior official from Conservative Central Office and whose Chairman Sir Basil Feldman is also the current Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Union of Conservative Associations; further notes that not one word of condemnation of the activities of the Shopping Hours Reform Council in support of the law-breakers has been uttered by any Government Minister or law officer; further notes that most Shopping Hours Reform Council companies are major donors to and/or major sponsors of the Conservative Party; and calls upon the Government to uphold the rule of law, and upon Sir Basil Feldman to resign from the chairmanship of either the Shopping Hours Reform Council or the National Union in order to avoid any possible conflict of interest or loyalty.
