Conduct Of Lord Williams Of Elvel And Lord Donoughue
EDM number 390 in 1991-92, proposed by Tim Smith on 12/12/1991.
That this House congratulates both the Lord Williams of Elvel on initiating a debate in the House of Lords on 31st Jan 1991, on the important matter of corporate governance, and the Lord Donoghue on contributing to the debate; agrees with their Lordships that the chairman of a public company should have regard to the interests of employees in general and that alert and truly independent non-executive directors have a role in scaling down the more outrageous ambitions of chief executives and chairmen; and regrets that the noble Lord failed to put these principles into practice as far as their close association with the late Robert Maxwell was concerned.
