Resettlement Unit Closure Programme

That this House is gravely concerned that the original intention of the Government, announced in 1985, to close all resettlement units in order to provide a better service to the homeless people who used them has been subverted by the Government's insistence that the Resettlement Agency establish resettlement unit closure targets which means that insufficient attention is being paid to the provision of satisfactory alternative accommodation, as promised by the present Prime Minister when a social security minister; is also concerned that the Resettlement Agency no longer calls meetings of the National Advisory Steering Group, which was set up to advise on the spread and suitability of the proposed replacement programme; and calls for the suspension of the Resettlement Unit closure programme pending the regional review teams being reconstituted to consider the adequacy of the direct access accommodation and move on facilities; and the national advisory steering group being convened regularly to produce recommendations on the national provision of these services for the homeless.
