Televising Rape Trials

EDM number 366 in 1991-92, proposed by Tony Banks on 10/12/1991.

That this House regrets the extensive coverage given by British television news to extracts from the William Kennedy Smith rape trial; believes that the use of cameras in the courtroom amounts to trial by television of all concerned and in a rape case is particularly degrading to the woman who may have suffered the violation; further believes that such television coverage of rape trials has more to do with voyeurism than justice; and calls upon the Government and Opposition parties to make it clear that televising courtroom cases will not be introduced into the United Kingdom.
