Murton Colliery
EDM number 314 in 1991-92, proposed by John Cummings on 02/12/1991.
That this House notes with concern and regret the closure of Murton Colliery, the last inland colliery in the North East coalfield; compliments the present workforce and that of previous generations of Murton miners who have won coal for the benefit of the nation; notes that the production price prior to closing was ú38 per ton, the cheapest deep-mined coal in Europe, and that some 40 million tons of coal reserves have been lost to the nation forever; deplores the action of British Coal in blackmailing and bludgeoning the Murton workforce to withdraw from the review procedure; recognises the value of the skilled Murton workforce; and requires Her Majesty's Government to provide the necessary funds for retraining and re-skilling of miners who are made redundant and make available the necessary resources to enable the local authorities to prepare a new infrastructure for the attraction and development of new industries.
