New Arms Race
EDM number 24 in 1991-92, proposed by Paul Flynn on 31/10/1991.
That this House is alarmed that, in defiance of the declared aims of President Bush and the Prime Minister, a new high tech arms race is roaring ahead; notes that since the Gulf War the United States of America has sold $15 billion worth of weapons to Middle East countries and that spending on arms by the Gulf states has leapt by 75 per cent. in 1991 and in the month of July 1991 the United States of America sold $7 billion worth of arms worldwide; emphasises that uncontrolled arms sales threaten world stability and peace and deepen the impoverishment of under-developed countries; and calls for United Nations action to curb arms proliferation.
