J & P Coats (Uk) Ltd And Job Losses In Paisley
EDM number 239 in 1991-92, proposed by Irene Adams on 21/11/1991.
That this House deplores the announcement by J & P Coats (UK) Ltd. that it intends closing the last of its thread manufacturing mills in Paisley with the potential loss of 320 jobs; recalls that the company was founded in Paisley and has attained its current multinational status largely through the efforts of generations of Paisley mill-workers who are now to be abandoned; believes that company owes a debt of loyalty to the town and the workers; further believes that there is a sound economic argument for the retention of thread manufacture in Paisley by J & P Coats; calls upon the company to invest in and expand its Paisley operation; and wishes every success to the workforce's campaign to make the directors of J & P Coats see sense.
