THE DESTRUCTION OF PAISLEY'S MANUFACTURING BASE
EDM number 237 in 1991-92, proposed by Robert Parry on 21/11/1991.
That this House is outraged by the destruction of Paisley's manufacturing base since the Conservatives came to power; notes that in a reply to the honourable Member for Paisley South the Scottish Industry Minister admitted that between 1979 and 1989 Paisley postcode area lost an astounding 76 per cent. of its manufacturing jobs; notes that this figure does not include further massive job losses in the last two years; notes that most of these losses are attributable to Her Majesty's Government's home-grown recessions since 1979; further believes that it is high time that the Government properly supported Renfrew District Council and Strathclyde Regional Council in their vigorous effort to encourage inward investment to the area; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to help the economy of the Paisley area either by launching a major economic initiative or by resigning so that Labour's sensible and coherent economic policies can be implemented.
