The Future Of Postal Services In Britain

That this House, noting the results of the MORI Poll conducted between 18th-21st October 1991 from a representative sample of 1,976 people across the United Kingdom, that (a) 66 per cent. of respondents believe consumers would benefit if the postal service remains in the public sector, (b) 87 per cent. of respondents are either very satisfied or fairly satisfied with the service they receive from the Royal Mail, (c) if the Royal Mail were to be privatised 66 per cent. of respondents believe that postal charges will go up and 62 per cent. believe there will be less public confidence in the security of the mail service and (d) 52 per cent. are opposed to ending the second delivery of mail to households, calls on the Government to give an absolute commitment to keep the Royal Mail in the public sector; and further calls on the Government to maintain the letter monopoly so as to ensure a universal tariff and to protect urban and rural customers alike.
