Electricty Costs For The Steel Industry
EDM number 151 in 1991-92, proposed by Peter Hardy on 13/11/1991.
That this House notes with alarm that production at Rotherham Engineering Steel has had to be seriously reduced as a result of the increased price of electricity so that one furnace is now closed and the two remaining are not operated during evening hours; notes that the additional charges made by the electricity supply industry would add up to an extra ú65 on the price of a tonne of engineering steel; expresses astonishment that this modern and hitherto successful business should have been forced into such a position; wonders whether Rotherham Engineering Steel will be able to maintain its very significant contribution to the national economy, not least by its previously substantial export achievement, regrets that Ministers seem neither to care about nor to fully understand the problem; and calls for such urgent action as might reveal a modicum of common sense.
