Fire Cover For London
EDM number 134 in 1991-92, proposed by Simon Hughes on 12/11/1991.
That this House notes that on 12th November the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority will have considered the results of its consultations on reductions in fire cover for London; further notes that the review results from a Home Office circular which seeks to ensure 'maximum economy' but only 'an adequate level of public protection'; believes that this is the wrong way round; believes furthermore that the suggested cuts in numbers of fire engines and fire stations are based on time limits for getting to fires, which are minimum standards, not targets; believes that fire engines reaching fires sooner should be a source of pride, not a sign of extravagance; is deeply concerned that the Home Office is pressing the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority to make cuts and that the Department of the Environment has imposed severe spending limits on the Authority; agrees with the Liberal Democrat group on the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority that the safety of Londoners should come first, rather than the 10 pence per person per year poll tax saving which would result from cutting fire engines and stations; and calls upon the Home Office to stop pressuring the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority to make cuts and on the Department of the Environment to allow the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority to provide the level of fire cover demanded by the people of London.
