Proposed Withdrawal Of Legal Aid For Immigration And Asylum Advice
EDM number 130 in 1991-92, proposed by Timothy Raison on 12/11/1991.
That this House recognises the value of professional, qualified and impartial legal advice for those not able to pay for it, and re-affirms its view that this should continue to be available to those seeking immigration and asylum advice; notes that the United Kingdom Immigration Advisory Service, with only eight offices nationwide, is unlikely to be able to replace all the solicitors and law centres currently offering such advice, without substantially increased public funding, far greater than the ú2.6 million currently spent on legal aid in this area of law; and calls on Her Majesty's Government urgently to reconsider this proposal.
