Rt Hon Member For Henley And The Council Tax
EDM number 104 in 1991-92, proposed by Alex Salmond on 07/11/1991.
That this House notes the view expressed by the honourable Member for Henley in the House of Commons on 21st March 1991 that any system of local government should be based on fairness; believes that his assertion sits uneasily with the fact that he, as the wealthiest member of the Cabinet is to pay approximately ú274 in council tax for his London home while first time buyers in Aberdeen will have to pay ú280 for a property worth ú35,000 and ú320 for one worth ú45,000; deplores the fact that Scottish homeowners will, on average, pay between a fifth and a half extra in council tax than their counterparts in England will pay for comparable properties; and believes that such a state of affairs has little to do with the alleged prudence of Conservative local authorities and everything to do with the attempt by this Conservative Government to bribe their way to a fourth consecutive election victory in the Tory heartlands of South East England.
