International Court Of Justice - Nicaragua

EDM number 996 in 1990-91, proposed by George Foulkes on 19/06/1991.

That this House is shocked by the continued refusal of the United States of America to accept the 1986 International Court of Justice verdict which found the United States guilty of military and paramilitary aggression against Nicaragua; is moreover deeply concerned that by withholding promised aid the United States is coercing the current Nicaraguan Government into dropping its US$17 billion indemnity claim for damages caused by the illegal aggression; believes that the United States' stance reveals an appalling disdain for international law and insults the rights and dignity of the Nicaraguan people; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to appeal to President Chamorro to uphold the indemnity claim, and to make a strong and public protest to the United States urging it to recognise the International Court of Justice verdict and pay the US$17 billion it owes the people of Nicaragua.
