Criminal Justice Reform (No 1.)
EDM number 993 in 1990-91, proposed by Peter L Pike on 19/06/1991.
That this House notes that the recent release of the Birmingham Six highlights widespread concern about the criminal justice system in this country; recognises that there are other cases where there are serious doubts that the convictions are safe and satisfactory; welcomes the announcement of a Royal Commission to look at the criminal justice system; but urges the Government to act without delay to end convictions on the basis of uncorroborated confession evidence, and to establish an independent review body with wide investigative powers to undertake inquiries into cases where considerable doubt has been expressed about the nature of the conviction.
This motion has been signed by a total of 62 MPs.
