Scottish Office Ministers And Fishing Decommissioning Scheme

EDM number 989 in 1990-91, proposed by Alex Salmond on 18/06/1991.

That this House notes that the then Scottish Office Fisheries Minister put forward a proposal for a decommissioning scheme in late 1989 to assist in the restructuring of the fishing industry; notes that then, as now, the proposal floundered on the entrenched opposition of the current Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; notes that the opposition of the Right honourable Member appears to be based on no better reason than his own personal embarrassment at his role as the responsible Minister for the mistakes in the application of the last decommissioning scheme; notes that Scottish Office Ministers' recent public opposition to decommissioning proposals indicates that they are more concerned with kow-towing to English Tory Ministers than advancing the case for the Scottish fishing industry; and demands that the Scottish Office now publish their proposals from 1989 and secure for Scottish fishermen the same entitlement as is available to fishermen across the European Community.
