ST MARK'S HOSPITAL

That this House recognises with pride the worldwide reputation and excellence of St. Mark's Hospital in City Road, London EC1, the only hospital in the Western world devoted solely to the treatment of patients with intestinal diseases, including bowel cancer and its prevention, colitis, Crohn's disease, intestinal failure, incontinence, and anal diseases; notes that consultants in many parts of Britain regularly refer desperately ill patients for treatment at St, Mark's; acknowledges that St Mark's acts as a training centre for specialists nationwide, and as an unrivalled centre of research and development; expresses deep concern that due to financial problems facing City and Hackney Health Authority proposals are being considered which would involve the closure of the hospital, the removal of staff and patients to one floor of a ward block in St. Bartholomew's Hospital, the effective loss of space for research,teaching, or investigation, and the disappearance of St Mark's identity and reputation; and calls on the Secretary of State to ensure that this unique and valuable hospital can be saved intact, to continue its work.
