FLEET STREET AND MEDIA WORKERS' CRECHE

EDM number 947 in 1990-91, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 12/06/1991.

That this House notes the comments of the Minister for Local Government and Inner Cities in the debate on the Government of London, 5th June, Official Report, column 296, when he asked 'who misses its (the Greater London Council) grants to the Fleet Street and media workers creche' and wishes to place on record the following facts (a) the Greater London Council grant to establish this nursery was made on the proviso that the nursery would be self-financing within two years, (b) the nursery recently celebrated its fifth birthday and is self-financing although the costs of running any nursery, let alone in Central London, are very high and (c) that if it no longer existed it would be missed by the children who use it and their parents, many of whom would no longer be able to work because of lack of affordable child care in the area and those employers who would lose valuable staff; and advises the Minister to visit the creche in order to apologise to the nursery workers and parents concerned.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
