British Sign Language
EDM number 943 in 1990-91, proposed by Roger Sims on 11/06/1991.
That this House calls upon the Government to give official recognition to British Sign Languages, on which 50,000 profoundly deaf British people depend for communication affecting all aspects of their social, official and civic lives; notes that the EEC resolution of June 1988 urged member states to give official recognition to the national sign language of their deaf people; further notes that the resolution also drew attention to the shortage of trained sign language interpreters and the need for improved training of them; and requests the Government to remedy these deficiencies in Britain.
This motion has been signed by a total of 67 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
