North British Housing Association & Former Glc Tenants Outside London
EDM number 928 in 1990-91, proposed by Clive Soley on 06/06/1991.
That this House notes that a large number of homes were built by the former Greater London Council outside London to enable Londoners to retire in good faith outside the capital city, with a guarantee of low rents; notes that this system has over the years helped to ease the strain in London and also provided an excellent environment for retired people; further notes that many of these homes were sold off at well below their true value by the London Residuary Body to the North British Housing Association without proper consultation with residents, such as in the case of the 36 residents in Faversham at Bisingwood, Wildish Road, the Leas and Cobb, which were sold for less than ú6,000 per property; notes also that rents have been sharply increased since North British Housing Association took over the properties in 1989, by around ú25 per week, and that residents have raised queries concerning the allocation procedures used by the Association; fully supports the Labour prospective Parliamentary candidate for Faversham, Helen Brinton, in her campaign of support for the residents' grievances; and calls for the Public Accounts Committee to carry out a full inquiry into the sale of these properties to the North British Housing Association and their subsequent management of all former GLC properties.
