Current Events In The Baltic Republic
EDM number 920 in 1990-91, proposed by Margaret Ewing on 05/06/1991.
That this House notes with concern that whilst President Gorbachev has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Soviet troops continue to harass the freedom-loving peoples of Lithuania; considers that the report justifying Soviet action during January's events when 13 civilians died is in direct contradiction to statements given to honourable Members of this House during their visit of 10th-15th March to all three Baltic republics; and calls upon the Government to make it clear to the Soviet authorities that the United Kingdom regards the continuing threat of violence against those seeking Baltic independence through democratic means as unacceptable and a violation of international agreements on human rights and self-determination.
