Low Pay Of University Non-Teaching Staff
EDM number 911 in 1990-91, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 05/06/1991.
That this House condemns the appalling low pay of thousands of non-teaching staff in universities, in clerical, secretarial and administrative jobs where take home salaries start at just ú87 a week and the average take home pay is only ú128 a week; notes that the real value of non-teaching staff's pay has been steadily eroded over the last decade where, since 1980, average earnings of all non-manual workers have increased by 35 per cent more than those of these workers; recognises that such low pay contributes to low morale and increases the feeling that these workers are subsidising underfunded institutions; and calls for sufficient funds to enable all university non-teaching staff to be immediately paid a minimum wage of ú175 for a 35 hour week as a step towards decent salaries for all university staff.
