Cheshire County Council And Abuse Of Public Funds

EDM number 892 in 1990-91, proposed by Nicholas Winterton on 03/06/1991.

That this House notes with grave concern the decision of the Cheshire County Council to allocate ú60,000 to finance a public relations campaign; registers its doubts about the use of local government finances to fund the publication "Your Cheshire" which makes the quite unsupportable claim that Macclesfield is doing better with Cheshire; denounces the profligate decision to replace all the existing roadsigns marking the Cheshire County boundary with expensive new reflective signs; notes that this abuse of public funds by the County Council coincides with decisions to close excellent local schools, reduce grass cutting services, slash school crossing patrols on busy roads, and a failure adequately to improve the local road systems; registers its outrage at this cynical siphoning of funds from service budgets in order that they can be allocated to public relations campaigns in the run-up to the forthcoming review of local government structure; calls upon the Secretary of State for the Environment urgently to intervene to prevent this Goebblesesque propaganda war against the long-suffering community chargepayers of Cheshire; and demands an urgent inquiry by the Audit Commission into the work of the Cheshire County Council.
