Kvaerner Govan Ltd

EDM number 859 in 1990-91, proposed by Jim Sillars on 20/05/1991.

That this House deplores the action by the management of Kvaerner Govan Limited, in issuing dismissal notices to 1,600 workers engaged in a dispute about hours and conditions; notes that the workforce concerned took action only after holding a secret ballot; recognises that workers' anxieties about the new hours and conditions offered by the management are genuine; condemns the management's claim, issued without a shred of evidence, that workers are deliberately trying to close the yard; regrets that the laws of defamation allow management to cast such a slur upon working people with impunity; calls on the management to stop acting like old style discredited Clyde shipbuilding bosses; and demands that the dismissal notices be withdrawn and that management show a willingness to end the dispute by negotiations and not bully-boy tactics.

This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
