Mineral Extraction In Antarctica

EDM number 790 in 1990-91, proposed by Ann Winterton on 01/05/1991.

That this House welcomes the proposal made at Madrid for a ban on mining activity and progress towards a return to consensus by Antarctic Treaty parties as proposed by Her Majesty's Government; and congratulates the Government on having provided the focal point for these proposals, which ensure that Antarctica is handed over in pristine condition to future generations and that proper mechanisms exist for avoiding any legal vacuum that would place this unique environmental asset at risk,
