Newspaper Ownership
EDM number 79 in 1990-91, proposed by John Cummings on 15/11/1990.
That this House deplores the actions of Robert Maxwell and Rupert Murdoch in increasing the prices of the Daily Mirror and The Sun while reducing the percentage discount terms to retail newsagents which demonstrates both their powerful position in the United Kingdom when these two newspapers alone account for over half the total sales of all newspapers in the country and are only two of the national newspapers owned by these two publishers and their lack of concern for the survival of small businessmen, particularly those who run local and independent shops; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to reduce the dominance and influence that these two individuals exercise over the British public.
