British Aid For The Kurds (No 3)
EDM number 748 in 1990-91, proposed by Harry Barnes on 24/04/1991.
That this House is aware that from the start of April the public and many commercial organisations have shown a great practical concern for the plight of the Kurds and have readily and often spontaneously donated thousands of tonnes of essential material aid to help relieve suffering; expresses its deep admiration for those voluntary organisations who have collected, boxed, despatched and otherwise organised relief aid and congratulates those individuals and organisations who have provided free storage space and internal transport facilities; contrasts these great humanitarian efforts with the tawdry response of the Government who, despite repeated requests, have only arranged for restricted storage space, the occasional internal movement of goods and the odd flight of materials to the area of need; notes that although voluntary organisations are currently moving more aid by air than the Government is, there is nevertheless a growing log-jam of their supplies within the United Kingdom itself, so that materials collected two or three weeks ago have not yet been moved out of this country; and therefore calls upon the Government to organise an immediate and massive air-lift to shift supplies that would otherwise be bogged down in this country.
