Ferrybridge B
EDM number 745 in 1990-91, proposed by Geoffrey Lofthouse on 24/04/1991.
That this House is appalled at the announcement of the closure of Ferrybridge B coal-fired power station in the constituency of Pontefract and Castleford, with the loss of more than 400 jobs; notes that this is in line with Government policy to run down the coal industry in preparation for privatisation; believes it will be the most ironic of outcomes of the United Kingdom's short-term culture if the country's largest and longest-life fuel resource were allowed to fade away at the very moment when technology relieves coal of its environmental criticisms and makes it once again incontrovertibly the most economic choice for new power plant; and calls on the Prime Minister to reverse the unemployment-creating policies that have brought so much misery to thousands of families in the area covered by Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and throughout the country since 1984.
This motion has been signed by a total of 32 MPs.
