Singleton Hospital Casualty Unit
EDM number 743 in 1990-91, proposed by Alan Williams on 24/04/1991.
That this House notes with surprise and disappointment that, despite the indication by the Parliamentary Secretary at the Welsh Office that a decision on the continuation of the 24-hour casualty facility at Swansea's Singleton Hospital would have to be announced before the end of the last financial year to enable the West Glamorgan Health Authority to plan its budget for 1991-92, still no announcement has been made; wonders if, with 30,000 people have signed a petition to the Secretary of State demanding the continuation of that service and its expansion to use available X-ray facilities, Ministers have decided that it is politically expedient not to make the announcement before the 2nd May Council Election because an adverse decision would cost them seats on Swansea Council; demands that the Secretary of State makes his decision known before the end of April to avoid the suspicion that a political cover-up is taking place; and urges the 30,000 signatories to make their objections known in the ballot box if the announcement is further delayed.
This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs.
