Anglo-Irish Agreement 5 Years On
EDM number 69 in 1990-91, proposed by Ian Paisley on 14/11/1990.
That this House recalls, that on 15th November 1985, an agreement was signed with the Government of the Irish Republic, the purpose of which was peace, stability and reconciliation for Northern Ireland; declares on all counts that the agreement has failed; recognises that there have been no satisfactory measures by the Irish Republic government to secure the extradition of wanted terrorists to the United Kingdom; regrets that the S.D.L.P. has not publicly supported the Army, the UDR, the RUC, and the RUCR, nor called their supporters to join the security forces; condemns the action of the Irish Republic's Government in stopping the Northern Irish Secretary of State's initiative of 5th July 1990; notes that the electorate of the Irish Republic has elected a President opposed to the Agreement; believes that the Agreement has become an obstacle to political progress; and urges Her Majesty's Government to seek an alternative to, and replacement of, the Agreement which can command the confidence of the people of Northern Ireland.
