Conduct Of Rt Hon Member For Bath

That this House condemns the Right honourable Member for Bath for giving his consent as Secretary of State for the Environment to the sale of housing stock by Rochester upon Medway City Council to the Medway Housing Society in July 1990 at a price which deprived the ratepayers of ú56 million and in circumstances which no sensible or prudent financial adviser could possibly think were other than disastrous for the Council and its ratepayers; condemns the Right honourable Member for Bath for giving his consent to this scheme under the provisions of the Housing Act 1985, on 18th July 1990, just six days after his own adviser, Richard Gibson, had told the Council that the scheme was not as the Government had envisaged and that it would be a very difficult proposal for the Department to accept; condemns the Right honourable Member for Bath for giving his consent to a scheme which he knew was so bad that he allowed for a ú250,000 sweetener to be used to refinance the scheme if circumstances allowed; condemns the Right honourable Member for Bath for putting political ideology before fiscal probity; and finally condemns the Right honourable Member for Bath for consenting to a scheme which may be unlawful.
