Problems Of Newly Arrived Refugees
EDM number 65 in 1990-91, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 13/11/1990.
That this House notes with concern the conclusions of the document recently issued by The Refugee Council, entitled, Newly-Arrived Refugees: Problems and Proposals, that inadequate provision and discriminatory regulations make the first months after a refugee's entry demoralising, arduous and painful; welcomes the document's proposals on arrival procedures especially those for children, housing, employment, welfare, education and health; is opposed to restrictions on the number of refugees or asylum seekers, believing that most applications are made by citizens of countries where there is ample evidence of human rights abuses; and calls on the Government to implement the document's recommendations forthwith.
