Poll Tax Reparations
EDM number 608 in 1990-91, proposed by Donald Anderson on 14/03/1991.
That this House resolves that an independent commission should be established to ascertain so far as is practicable the total cost to the nation of the abortive poll tax experiment; further resolves that the scope of the enquiry be not limited to, but should include, the costs of diversion of central and local government personnel and financial resources including dedicated buildings and equipment, and the effect on the functioning of magistrates' courts and sheriffs offices and that the commission be enabled to make comment on the pain and suffering caused to the victims of the experiment and on the reduction in respect for the legal systems to determine individual culpability and to recommend possible reparation for the damage caused; and resolves that the commission be directed to report not later than the date of the next general election.
