Logic Of United Nations Resolutions

EDM number 535 in 1990-91, proposed by Harry Barnes on 26/02/1991.

That this House believes that it is immoral to insist that Saddam Hussein must comply with all 12 United Nations resolutions on the Gulf crisis before there can be an agreed end to the war; recognises that such a requirement is a logical impossibility when the only resolutions directed exclusively at Iraq are 660, calling for a withdrawal from Kuwait, and 664, seeking to protect and obtain the release of third country nationals and hostages; further recognises that the remaining resolutions are either dated by events (667, 674) or are exclusively (661, 665, 666, 677, 669, 670, 678) or essentially (662) directed at guiding the actions of United Nations agencies and members in their dealings with Iraq; is conscious that Saddam Hussein will have complied with United Nations requirements when he acts upon Resolutions 660 and 664; and further believes that he should be given the opportunity to comply with Resolution 660 whilst sanctions and diplomatic measures are then used to press him into a full compliance with Resolution 664.
