Export Of Live Equines (No. 2)
EDM number 529 in 1990-91, proposed by Ronnie Fearn on 25/02/1991.
That this House notes that the ending of British export controls linked to minimum values will lead to the live transport of horses and ponies to continental abattoirs in 1992; further notes that if minimum values controls are lifted horses may be made to endure journeys of 24 hours or more before slaughter; notes that horses may have to endure cramped, overcrowded conditions without food or water; notes that horses may be injured or die as a result; notes that others may suffer considerable discomfort and distress; believes that the export of live horses and ponies for slaughter is unnecessary and cruel; and calls on the European Community to maintain restrictions that will prevent the resumption of transport of live equines to continental slaughterhouses.
